Best and Worst Trivia Team Names

Listen, it’s not easy to have a great team name. Most people just take the safe option, and name themselves after something that already exists (whether it be a reference, a movie title, etc.) like Mischief Managed, or Knights of Ren. However, some teams really go for it in an effort to stand out. Big swings can produce home runs, or big whiffs, and there’s plenty of both as we go through the worst and best Trivia Team Names.

The Unbearable Weight of Mediocre Talent

Anthony Tisdall and Melissa Woody did what many good general trivia players do, and decided to goof around in Fandom. They had very entertaining matches, but overall I don’t think either of them planned on winning any belts. That didn’t stop them from coming up with a kick ass name. Referencing a recent Nicolas Cage film, Anthony and Melissa showed everyone whose team name is just a movie title turned into a pun, how to do it right. It’s so good that I swore to say the whole name every time.

The Saga

You may be confused. The Saga is the Fandom team consisting of Brandon Cohen and Nazario Montenegro in the 2023 season. But why would this be the worst? The Saga? Sounds generic enough. Well…. The full name of “The Saga” is actually “The Twilight Saga: Ascendant, The Death Cure - Part 2”. This was one of only a few names I actually had to come up with shorthand for. I told Nazario and Brandon I would never say it in full, but I feel it was important for you all to know.

Jurassic Sharks

Damn, Kirk is good at this. Jurassic Sharks were a middle of the road team, and one of only a few that used the same name in Melee and Fandom. They had a couple great upsets, but overall, they just picked a great name. Two badass words referencing Spielberg films that when put together just embody coolness. It probably helps that they had their own logo.

Galac-Deez Nuts

Abel. Antonio. I love you. I do. But I think it brings you joy to hear me say how much I hate your name. Said it from the beginning. A bad pun, high school level humor at best. Horrible all around. However (and perhaps this was their strategy), they have brought respect to the name with their performance. I now believe Galac-Deez Nuts is the greatest Fandom team playing to never win the belts, and if you can make me think of a team name with a “Deez Nuts” joke in it and subconsciously give respect, then good on you.

America’s Asses

Incredible. This is perhaps the best example of taking a reference, something said within a movie, and turning that popular line into a team name. The carefree nature of Jacoby and Brian in Fandom fit this Avenger’s Endgame reference perfectly. In fact, this name was so perfect that it is one of only two team names that were allowed to be reused, as Brian would keep the name when Andrew Barr replaced Jacoby.

DUM-Es

One of the greatest Fandom teams of all time. I get the reference, I do. Just never grew on me.

Ranger Dudes/Pittsburgh Power Rangers/Enter the Dragonzord/Ranger Force

RJ, we love and miss you. Would love to see you back, but we get it. You like Power Rangers.

Iowish Brothers

Once Jack was replaced with Redshaw as Doug Cassel’s teammate, this was the most creative pivot from Irish Brothers they could have done.

Bounty Hunters Anonymous

Most of Jake and Antonio’s team names may not be taking home any awards, but this Fandom team was a great choice.

The Riders of Brohan

Listen, based on everything Joe has accomplished, I hope he looks back at this point in his career and has a good chuckle. Funny story with the Riders of Brohan. They were initially called The Two Towers. Not the worst name ever. LOTR reference, but “meh” all the same. However, Ruben and Joe didn’t want “meh” so they took the biggest swing I have ever seen, to which I give respect despite the result. They changed it to The Riders of Brohan. Like Rohan, but “bros”. It was so wildly bad, but I think with Wookiee Mistake, Joe has all but erased that team name from most people’s minds…sorry to bring it up again.

License to Chill

A peek behind the curtain: I was backstage during the match that catapulted Mark Menchaca to Multiplex stardom. It was his upset against Brian Michaels in sudden death in the Warzone Tournament of 2020. One of the answers he gave was The Big Chill. I immediately suggested that as his nickname to his manager, and honestly it’s probably the best one out there. It would only be topped when he teamed with Cody Newberry, his manager, to join Fandom as License to Chill. The perfect spin on a Fandom movie title, perfectly representing the two players on the team. Again, this is the only other team name that was allowed to be used again when Mark teamed with Tyler Beutler, and I’m hoping it’s obvious as to why.
